RHS Chelsea Flower Show

RHS Chelsea Flower Show

Chrysanthemums Direct are delighted to announce that at the 2009 Chelsea Flower Show we were awarded an RHS Gold Medal for our display of Chrysanthemums.
Pictured are Tim Wonnacott and Debbie von Bergen, from the St. Catherine's Hospice, in front of the exhibit at Chelsea. Our new variety, named for Tim, is being sold with a donation from each sale going to the Hospice's New Horizons Appeal.

Gardening ScotlandGardening Scotland

The next show was Gardening Scotland in Edinburgh. Here we were awarded a Gold medal and the trophy for the Best New Exhibitor. This was the first show where we could sell plants directly to the public and the response was very good with sales being strong all through the show.
Royal Cornwall

Royal Cornwall

The following event took us to the opposite end of the country, to Wadebridge and the Royal Cornwll Agricultural show. Here we were awarded a Large Gold medal as well as the trophy for the Best New Exhibitor. This is a view of the exhibit and sales table.

RHS Gardener's World LiveRHS Gardener's World Live

Next to the NEC in Birmingham, where we put on our largest display at 30' long by 8' deep. Here we were awarded our second RHS Gold medal.
Axe Vale Garden Festival

Axe Vale Garden Festival

After a couple of days at home, having been on the road constantly since Chelsea, it was off to the delightful town of Axminster in Devon. The Axe Vale Garden Festival must rate as one of the friendliest shows of the year with all the committee members doing all they could to make every exhibitor welcome. All proceeds from the show were donated to local charities. Here we received a Large Gold medal and the honour of being judged Best in Show.

Lincolnshire Agricultural ShowLincolnshire Agricultural Show

From Axminster it was back up the M6 to Cheshire and then off across country to Lincoln. Two very hot days here with good crowds enjoying this large agricultural show. We received a Large Gold medal and the Edward Allwood Cup for Best in Show.
Arley Hall Garden Festival

Arley Hall Garden Festival

This weekend, with Martyn taking a few days off at home, saw Don Wright, with the help of Ro (the lady who packs all your mail order plants and is seen in front of our exhibit) and Trevor Lawrence, do the very local Arley Hall Garden Festival. Here we were awarded a Gold medal.

Royal Norfolk ShowRoyal Norfolk Show

The Royal Norfolk was notable for the very hot weather, up to 30 degrees Celsius on the Wednesday. This flower show organised by the Norwich Horticultural Society (the oldest horticlutural society in the country) is held in conjunction with the agricultural show and attracts a large knowledgable crowd. Here we gained a Gold medal and also "Best in Show".
The journey to Hampton Court

The journey to Hampton Court

Friday 3rd July saw Martyn set off to Hampton Court however, the day almost ended in disaster after a tyre blowout on the M40. Fortunately, despite the van turning over, Martyn was not injured nor was any other motorist involved. What followed was a great team effort, Andy and Ben, from the nursery, volunteered to set off and, having picked Martyn up from hospital, went to recover all that was salvagable from the van and deliver it to Hampton Court. Their day finished at 3 o'clock the next morning when they arrived back in Cheshire. A fresh load of flowers was cut overnight, and together with new selling plants, delivered to the show on Saturday morning ready for staging.

Martyn and Don completed the staging of the exhibit and despite the upheaval managed to gain an RHS Gold medal. During the staging day Shirley and Tony, from the nursery, who had been drafted in at short notice spent the day sorting out the flowers that had survived the crash. Amazingly many were still in good shape, indeed some even made it into the display.
Great Yorkshire Agricultural Show

Great Yorkshire Agricultural Show

With Hampton Court not finishing until Sunday evening Don staged the display in Harrogate. When Martyn had finished at Hampton Court he went back to the nursery to get fresh selling stock and onto Harrogate on the Monday ready to open on Tuesday morning. Here we were awarded a Large Gold medal.

Royal Welsh Agricultural ShowRoyal Welsh Agricultural Show

Now with a new van to replace the one written off the next port of call was Builth Wells and the Royal Welsh. This is a huge show with a very large audience who come from all over the country to this lovely part of Wales for a four day show. The weather was not wonderful but despite this a good time was had, with fair sales and a lot of interest shown in receiving our 2010 catalogue. We were awarded a Large Gold medal and the Creddington Cup for "Best in Show".
RHS Tatton Park Flower Show

RHS Tatton Park Flower Show

Tatton Park saw a change of style, with Don doing a Victorian themed exhibit using a number of props including 100 year old wheelbarrows and handcarts. The blooms still predominated and provided a spectacular display which was awarded a Gold medal. The BBC came to the nursery and filmed the preparations for the show, and this, along with a interview with Carol Klein, was broadcast on Gardener's World on the Thursday. This coverage caused a great deal of interest and we had a very busy show despite the weather.

New Forest and Hampshire County ShowNew Forest and Hampshire County Show

The thirteenth show of the season was at Brockenhurst and is one of the nicest Agricultural shows of the season. In a new, clear span, floral marquee we succeeded in winning two cups - Best Cut Flower and the Compton Cup for Best in Show.
Bakewell Show

Bakewell Show

Next came a trip over the hills to Derbyshire and the Bakewell show. Despite the very wet ground conditions we had a successful time, being awarded a Large Gold medal and the trophy for Best Exhibit in the flower show.

Shrewsbury ShowShrewsbury Show

Martyn now takes a weeks holiday, leaving Don to stage Shrewsbury. Don has been doing this show since 1954! For the second year running he was awarded the Edith Aveling cup for the Finest Exhibit in the Quarry Marquee. He was awarded this trophy last year using our blooms, but under his own name, when he was testing the market prior to the launch of Chrysanthemums Direct.
Southport Show

Southport Show

With Martyn back from his well earned break it is a short trip to the coast at Southport. Again the weather was not the best, so much for a barbeque summer! Here we gained a Large Gold medal and the Liverpool Daily Post Centenary trophy for the Best Exhibit of Chrysanthemums.

Edenbridge and Oxted Agricultural ShowEdenbridge and Oxted Agricultural Show

Over the Bank holiday weekend it was all the way down to Sussex and the Edenbridge and Oxted show, a large agricultural show which has a reputation for being a very friendly show enjoyed by a great number of families over the two days. For once the holiday Monday saw a lovely hot and dry day. Here we were awarded a Large Gold medal and Best in Show.
Bath and West Gardening Show

Bath and West Gardening Show

Next came what used to be the Amateur Gardening show at Shepton Mallet. A much smaller show than in recent years and all the floral exhibits are now in permanent buildings so no matter what the weather a dry time was ensured. Here we gained a Large Gold medal. This show also marked the end of young plant sales for 2009, some good bargains were snapped up by the public.

RHS Wisley Flower ShowRHS Wisley Flower Show

This show, at the poular RHS garden at Wisley in Surrey, had a new layout this year. Instead of the traditional floral marquee all the nurseries had a small outside area in which to create a display and then a covered area from which to sell their plants. This layout would not be suitable for our cut flower exhibits so we, along with two others, shared a marquee with Surrey area NAFAS and their spectacular floral art displays. This show saw our smallest display of the year, at just 15 feet long and, because of the new layout, the show was not judged. Sales were excellent, so much so that Martyn had to make a journey back to Cheshire on the Friday night to get more stock.
Harrogate Autumn Show

Harrogate Autumn Show

Two shows this weekend, so Don was off to Harrogate for the autumn show on the Great Yorkshire showground. Amongst the spectacular 30 foot exhibit the flower that caused most interest with the public was our new release for 2010, Chrysanthemum 'Green Mist' (seen in the middle of the picture), which was being given it's first outing. The exhibit was given a Premier award.

Newbury and Royal County of Berkshire ShowNewbury and Royal County of Berkshire Show

Martyn, meanwhile, was off to Newbury and the last big agricultural show of the year. A lovely sunny, warm weekend was enjoyed by huge crowds. The hot air balloons always make a spectacle at this show and the weather was just perfect for them. Here we were awarded a Large Gold medal and the Shepherd trophy for the Best Exhibit in the flower marquee.
Ardingly Autumn Show

Ardingly Autumn Show

This weekend saw us at the South of England showground in Sussex, for their Autumn Game Fair. This was just a small exhibit in with the amateur show, but caused a lot of interest and sales of cut flower went very well - indeed Martyn came home with an empty van!

RHS London ShowRHS London Show

This is what used to be called the Great Autumn Show in the RHS headquarters, Vincent Square, Westminster. For our last exhibit of 2009 we put on a spectacular 30 foot stand which, as the late autumn sunshine shone through the skylights, lit up the corner of the hall. Martyn waited with some degree of trepidation for the medal cards to be brought out, but we maintained the clean sweep with our 21st Gold medal of the year!
